The sound of the sanctuary stateRight from the early years of the Soviet Union, Russian musical life was changing. Composers were now required to create music that would serve the new socialist state and spur the workers to great achievements. This had major consequences for the freedom composers enjoyed. From now on, simple melodies, elements of folk music, sounds of factory machines and tractors, and especially the names of Lenin and Stalin dominated their work.
